The Casper Killer’s Lair. Tuesday, May 2nd 1030hrs.

I stood staring at the corkboard in stunned silence. It was everything I had been hoping for, and yet I couldn’t believe I’d actually found it.

Perhaps, after chasing shadows for so long, part of me believed the Djinn was always going to slip through my fingers.

She was ruthless at cleaning up loose ends, but she had underestimated TJ’s level of planning and preparation because here I was, staring at his ghostly rampage documented with near clinical precision.

Each of the victims were listed out in order on the board. A large black marker had been used to cross out each in turn. Only Judge Saunders remained unscathed.

As I expanded my search, I found a series of folders in the top drawer of the desk.

I pulled out the desk chair and took a seat. Going through this mountain of potential clues wasn’t going to be quick or easy, but I was determined to find some trace of the Djinn’s identity, so I set about the task of sifting through them.

The folders were bulging with loose paperwork. Inside was a veritable goldmine of target information on each of the victims: times, locations, patterns of travel, personal habits.

TJ must have watched each of his victims for weeks.

I opened the first folder. It contained information on his first target, Charlotte Stanley. He had settled on pushing a hairdryer into her evening bath to exact his revenge.

The second folder contained information about Victor Sellers, the man who had defended Mooney. TJ had a pile of notes on the man, including his personal schedule. How had he gotten that? Ultimately, he’d used that information to identify the firm’s parking garage as the sight for his cold-blooded murder.

When it came to James Mooney, the man responsible for TJ’s father’s accident, it was no surprise the notes were particularly meticulous.

Mooney's schedule had been documented for weeks. TJ had also scoped out the comings and goings from the tourist hostel during the month leading up to the murder. TJ had conducted his research and carefully planned the timing to ensure they happened in quick succession to keep the police from putting the pieces together in time.

Mooney was clearly the murder TJ had been most passionate about. The others might have played a part in his father's misfortune, but Mooney had been the man responsible for it.

I leafed through the folder a second time. Unfortunately, most of it was information I was either already aware of or was largely redundant due to the fact the victims were dead.

It turned out my thoughts about smuggling himself in the boot of the car to sneak into Mooney’s workshop was indeed a test run for Judge Saunders. TJ’s notes proved as much.

The car had been stolen, but Charlotte Stanley’s license plates ensured no one picked that up too quickly, given the make and model was similar.

Each detail had been carefully executed, but I pored through his notes again just to be sure.

Setting the pile of files aside, I found a notebook that had been liberated from the residual office supplies in the next room.
